Ian Thorpe takes brutal swipe at Peter Helliar on The Project

Tensions rose on The Project on Sunday night as Ian Thorpe took a brutal swipe at his television rival Peter Helliar during an interview.

The pair are competitors on The Amazing Race Celebrity Edition this year, which wrapped filming in June, with Peter's wife Bridget and Ian's friend Christian Miranda.

It seems the Olympic swimmer, 41, still had a bone to pick with the comedian, 49, as he accused Peter of letting his wife Bridget do all the work on the TV competition. 

The radio presenter tried to keep things friendly during the interview, asking Ian what he thought of The Amazing Race episode set to air right after The Project.

'I have to say, tonight's episode for me felt like the hardest day yet in the race,' Peter admitted to the sports commentator.

'There's bricklaying, we're at high altitude, the air is thinner, it was 40 degrees. Please tell me you found it as hard as I did.'

Ian immediately took fire at Peter, bk8 bk8thai calling out the scenes which saw the radio presenter standing back to let his wife Bridget complete the difficult task. 

'It was difficult, but mate I don't think there's too much that you do find hard because I noticed that your wife was doing a lot of the work the whole way through,' he said.

'You know that phrase where they say behind every great man, there's a great woman, well, behind Peter Helliar, there's just a great woman.'

Peter tried to play it off, joking: 'Listen, bk8 casino it's true, I married a great woman... but let's not talk her up too much. I hope she takes me to the Logies next year, I really do.'

However, bk8 bk8thai later in the segment, Peter tried to get a leg up on Ian by revealing the swimmer's teammate on the show, Christian, had to carry Ian's bag at one point.

'You're talking some trash considering the last episode, I'm pretty sure I saw your mate Christian with your backpack on his shoulder as well carrying the two,' he said.

'So if we're going to start this mate, you won't like where it's going.'

But Ian already had a brutal comeback lined up, saying: 'Mate, game on, game on. Your wife carried you the whole show.' 

Peter and Ian joined an all-star cast this year, alongside the likes of Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Luke McGregor and Jett Kenny.

The Amazing Race will return to Channel Ten and 10Play at 7:30pm on Monday night.
